What os can I put on my mid 2008 MacBook Pro as the old HDD has failed and I have no idea what is the latest system I can put on it as I got it from eBay like this can you pleas help me as I have no clue

I have had great success installing Ubuntu Linux on old computers: IMac, Macbook Pro, and Dell PC.
Yes up until Apple silicon at least. Then it gets tricky
I have installed Lubuntu on an old Tosibia Sattilite laptop from 2011.
I am working on installing MacOS on my brother's HP 2014 laptop (A.K.A Hackintosh)
but the same USB drive I used for Lubuntu I was trying to use to install macOS
I have tried erasing it and everything but now I need to make it bootable again.
Any way with just using the Disk Unity on my MacBook?
